Before You Start Your Search
Before you start your search for off-campus housing, you should consider these tips. Knowing what you want and where you want to live will help in your search.
Questions to consider:
How close to campus do you want to live?
Do you have a source of transportation?
Learn about the area you want to live in
Are there city/county ordinances you need to be aware of?
Do you want a house or apartment?
Do you want a roommate?
Do you want a one bedroom, two bedroom, three bedroom?
How many bathrooms do you need?
Do you have furniture or do you need a furnished place?
Determine a monthly budget you can live with (include rent, food, laundry, gas, utilities, etc)
Do you feel safe in the area you are looking in?
Ask someone who currently lives where you are looking if they feel safe there
What security features are important to you?
Is there controlled access or video cameras at entrances and exits?
Are the property and parking areas well lit at night?
What amenities are important: a pool, a laundry room, wireless internet, an exercise room, etc.?
Is the property well maintained?
Is having a maintenance person available 24 hours a day important?
Is having an on-site Resident Manager important?
