Before You Start Your Search

Before you start your search for off-campus housing, you should consider these tips.  Knowing what you want and where you want to live will help in your search.

     Questions to consider:

  • How close to campus do you want to live?

  • Do you have a source of transportation?

  • Learn about the area you want to live in

  • Are there city/county ordinances you need to be aware of?

  • Do you want a house or apartment?

  • Do you want a roommate?

  • Do you want a one bedroom, two bedroom, three bedroom?

  • How many bathrooms do you need?

  • Do you have furniture or do you need a furnished place?

  • Determine a monthly budget you can live with (include rent, food, laundry, gas, utilities, etc)

  • Do you feel safe in the area you are looking in?

  • Ask someone who currently lives where you are looking if they feel safe there

  • What security features are important to you?

  • Is there controlled access or video cameras at entrances and exits?

  • Are the property and parking areas well lit at night?

  • What amenities are important: a pool, a laundry room, wireless internet, an exercise room, etc.?

  •  Is the property well maintained?

  • Is having a maintenance person available 24 hours a day important?

  • Is having an on-site Resident Manager important?
