  • Tips for a Successful Online Room Selection
Online room selection will be open on May 1, 6 and 8. Room selection remains open each night from 6:00 pm - 7:00 am CDT the next morning. Once your login time arrives, you may return to it any time that it is open.

Before room selection begins, we encourage you to look at the resources about residence halls on our website and in the online application. The Residence Hall Information page within the application shows specific floorplans, to help you identify the locations of hall amenities like laundry rooms and kitchens. To save time during room selection, we encourage you to look at those ahead of time if you are interested in specific rooms.

Please check your application and make sure that your gender, honors college status, and college are correct prior to room selection. These will impact the residence halls you can select.

The HRC office will be open on May 1, 6 and 8 from 6:00-9:00 pm CDT, so please contact us if you have questions.

    Roommate Tips:
If you are looking for a roommate, the roommate search function of your online application will be available through 5:00 pm CDT on May 1. You must send and accept any roommate requests prior to that time in order to have confirmed roommates.

In order to pull in another student as a roommate, or have another student pull you in, you MUST be confirmed roommates. Do not wait until the last minute to send a roommate request or search for a roommate! Please be sure that all roommates within a group are eligible for the same community.

You may check the status of any roommate request by going to the Roommate Selection page of your online application. Please note, if you are going to pull in confirmed roommate choices during room selection, you must assign those students immediately after you assign yourself. If you don’t do so at that time, you can’t go back at a later time and pull those roommates into your room. You’ll have to pick another assignment in order to assign your roommates.

  • Freshman Housing Application Available Oct. 1
The housing application for incoming freshmen for Fall 2014-Spring 2015 will be available on our website October, 1, 2013, at 12:00 pm CST.

You must submit a complete application, including the housing contract and the $300.00 deposit ($25.00 application fee and $275.00 housing prepayment) in order for Housing and Residential Communities to receive your application and in order for you to be eligible for on-campus housing. You will receive email notification later in the in the fall and winter regarding how you will receive your housing assignment. Please note, your official email address as an incoming freshman is your Crimson email, so HRC will communicate with you using this email address. Please be sure to check it regularly.

You should apply for housing as soon as you are admitted to the University and pay the Freshman Enrollment Deposit. The earlier that you apply for housing, the more options you will have, as access to online room selection and housing assignment by HRC staff is based primarily on housing application date. Students with earlier application dates can pull in confirmed roommate choices with later dates, if space is available. The method of assignment will depend on availability and will be the one that will give students an assignment in the quickest and most efficient way. Students who apply for housing after April 1, 2014, will be assigned by HRC staff and may receive an assignment in the late spring or summer.

  • Move-In 2013 Sign Up Now Available
In order to select the day and time that best suits your family's schedule, you may sign up for your move-in time beginning at 8:00 a.m. CDT on Thursday, June 6. The system will be available to select a time until July 10. The number of students who can move in each hour is limited, and once a time slot is filled, you must select a different time.

You may sign up at http://housing.ua.edu/movein/checkin/signup.cfm.

Here is some other information to consider as you sign up for move in.
    - You must have a housing assignment in order to select your move-in time. If you are still waiting on an assignment, you can select your time after you are notified of your assignment. The system is updated nightly, so you may have to wait until the next day to sign up for a check-in time if you have received an assignment change or a new assignment.
    - If you are participating in an official early arrival activity, such as Million Dollar Band, sorority recruitment, or Alabama or Outdoor Action, you may select an early arrival time. If you are not taking part in one of these activities, you should plan to move in on August 16, 17, or 18.
    - Bryant Hall is not available for move in until August 17. If you assigned to Bryant Hall and must arrive earlier than the 17 because of an early arrival activity, please contact moveinhelp@sa.ua.edu for assistance.
    - Select your time carefully. If you wish to change your time later, you will have to first cancel your selected time, before you can choose another time. You may not find any time you prefer over your original time.
    - If you will be living on campus during the Summer II summer school session, you do not have to select a move-in time. You will transition to your fall assignment prior to the start of the official move-in process.

If you have specific questions about move-in or the process of selecting a time, please email moveinhelp@sa.ua.edu for assistance.

If you are committed to participating in the Honors community next year, we recommend that you do not make another assignment during online room selection. HRC staff will assign students beginning in May with very effort to place Honors students into Honors housing spaces as noted in the preferences on the students' housing applications.

If you have questions, please call us at 888-498-BAMA (2262).

  • Online Room Selection Update 4/9
If you are participating in Online Room Selection tonight, we want to bring a few things to your attention.

There is still vacant space in many of our residence halls for you to select. This includes empty double rooms in various traditional residence halls, as well as space in suites and Honors Housing. You are unlikely to find completely empty suites tonight, however, so if you have been planning to live with three other individuals, we suggest that you talk with your potential roommates and consider an alternate plan, including ways in which you might divide up two and two. If you are not initially able to find space with your preferred roommate(s), you may wish to take advantage of Room Swap, which allows a student to request a direct swap with another student and may facilitate your getting into a space that you want with a specific roommate. Information about Room Swap can be found at http://housing.ua.edu/new_students/room_swap_guide.cfm.

If you are interested in participating in a living-learning community, space is still available in the Business Living Option in Friedman Hall; in the male Engineering Living Option in Bryant Hall; in Colaboratory, the arts-focused community in Blount; and in the Arts & Sciences, Communication, Nursing and Human Environmental Sciences Communities in Harris Hall. If you are eligible for these communities, you will see them as options during room selection.

Please note, space changes quickly once room selection opens, and the above information should not be a guarantee regarding what you will see during room selection tonight. It is intended only as a guide, so that you have several potential plans in place prior to entering room selection this evening. Spaces do continue to change, as our staff process cancellations and as students move around, so other options may become available when room selection is again available from 4:00 p.m. CST until 7:00 a.m. from April 15-April 30.

  • Returner Applications for 2013-2014 No Longer Available
The application for returning student to live on campus in Fall 2013 is now closed.

The application was available from January 2 to February 1.

Priority for students to receive on-campus housing will be by application date, within academic classification. For example, a rising sophomore who applied at any time between January 2 and February 1 will have priority over a rising junior, regardless of his/her application date, and a rising junior will have priority over a rising senior. A rising sophomore who applied on January 2 will have priority over a rising sophomore who applies at any later date. In short, the best way to improve your chances of receiving housing was to apply as soon as the application was available. Students with housing scholarships that must be used on campus will receive housing, as long as they met all HRC application deadlines.

No deposit will be due with the initial application, which serves only to indicate interest in housing. This week, we will notify all students whether they can continue with the recontracting process and select a room. At that time, the $250.00 deposit and housing contract will be due. Please be prepared to pay the housing deposit in early February. Students who do not pay the deposit by the deadline, including students with housing scholarships, will not be eligible for on-campus housing.

  • Switchover to Heating
UA facilities personnel perform the required changeover from air conditioning to heating in the Fall. Facilities performs the changeover on the basis of priorities established to:
    (1) provide comfort to students living in University Housing,
    (2) maintain required temperatures to protect equipment and research in progress, and
    (3) serve the greatest number of individuals and activities.

Heating may not begin until the high outside air temperature has dropped below 55 F for three consecutive days. Temperature projections are also considered, as a switch to heat, when temperatures are projected to rise again, will result in uncomfortably hot temperatures in buildings and residence halls.

  • Community Ambassadors to Assist in Keeping Off-Campus Residents Connected
Housing and Residential Communities has launched a program aimed at keeping off-campus students connected to the University. The Community Ambassadors will act as liaisons for residents that live in the communities off of Queen City Avenue.

Like the resident advisor position, Community Ambassadors will assist in connecting residents within the communities by hosting community events and serve as a resource with both city and campus information. The Community Ambassadors will also provide off-campus students with a voice in the Division of Student Affairs and disseminate information to the residents of the specific community he or she is over.

Community Ambassadors will be trained on laws and ordinances that would allow them to better serve the residents of the selected communities. The CAs will also attend bi-weekly meetings with Off-Campus Resources and are encouraged to be present at monthly neighborhood association meetings in order to be fully informed about city and campus affairs.

Unlike resident advisors, Community Ambassadors will not serve on-call for emergency response or tenant-landlord disputes, but rather will be a contact for the Off-Campus Resources staff for follow up questions and information. The CAs will also be in contact with UAPD, TPD, and Judicial Affairs in order to help them have information for the meetings with the residents of the community.

The Community Ambassador position is a volunteer commitment that will consist of two to four hours per month that could increase with the amount of involvement the ambassador invests. “Community ambassadors will gain leadership experience, event planning, as well as a knowledge of the rental market, City of Tuscaloosa ordinances and laws that affect anyone living in the off campus areas,” Elmore said.

Requirements and applications can be found online here.

Current students who wish to have the opportunity for on-campus housing again in Fall 2013 must submit the online housing application before the deadline. The application will be available at 8:00 a.m. on January 2, 2013. The deadline to submit the application is February 1, 2013. Priority for students to receive on-campus housing will be by application date, within academic classification. For example, a rising sophomore who applies at any time between January 2 and February 1 will have priority over a rising junior, regardless of his/her application date, and a rising junior will have priority over a rising senior. A rising sophomore who applies on January 2 will have priority over a rising sophomore who applies at any later date. In short, the best way to improve your chances of receiving housing is to apply as soon as the application is available. Students with housing scholarships that must be used on campus will receive housing, as long as they meet all HRC application deadlines.

No deposit will be due with the initial application, which serves only to indicate interest in housing. After the February 1 deadline, we will notify all students whether they can continue with the recontracting process and select a room. At that time, the $250.00 deposit and housing contract will be due. Please be prepared to pay the housing deposit in early February. Students who do not pay the deposit by the deadline, including students with housing scholarships, will not be eligible for on-campus housing.

  • RAs win Humanitarian Award
The UA Resident Advisors were awarded the SEAHO Humanitarian Award at the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers Conference in February, for going above and beyond the call of duty for a student in crisis by demonstrating physical effort, spiritual commitment, or act of bravery, determination, and courage.

The RAs were nominated for this award by Assistant Director Laura Sanders, in recognition for their resolve to help those around them, including their residents, HRC staff, and the Tuscaloosa community. Sanders says, “On April 27, 2011, we turned to our staff to help run donation centers and shelters, translators, and movers. We looked to our staff to keep the students calm when everything they knew changed forever. The RAs accepted the tasks with open arms and smiles and never once complained.”

Sanders recalls going to check on the RAs, and they asked her how she was doing instead. “This hit me very hard because at this point the RAs had been rotating fire walks for 24 hours for 2 days and instead of asking for anything they were asking how I was,” she says. “They helped the students and the community in countless ways but also us -- those of us that did not live on campus -- by smiling and showing us the resilient spirit of our college students.”
