ONLINE ROOM SELECTION FAQ

How will I select my room?

You will be assigned a date and time when you can first access the online room selection process.  You will be notified of this date and time by e-mail to your Bama e-mail account.  You can also find your assigned time online through the HRC Web site beginning in January 2010.  Beginning with your assigned time, you will be able to access the room selection process through myBama.  During room selection, you will see all vacant spaces in the residence halls for which you are eligible.  If you wish to pull in a roommate, you will want to identify rooms that have at least two vacant spaces.  Once you have been given access to the room selection process, you will continue to have access until room selection ends in the summer.

How does HRC determine when I can select my room?

A student’s access to the online room selection process is determined by 1) his/her housing application date; 2) living-learning community participation, if any; and 3) any special needs.

When is online room selection available?

Online room selection will begin in March for living-learning communities (including honors housing), and in April for freshmen not participating in a living-learning community. Further information will be emailed to your bama email. Once you have been given your initial access to the room selection process, you may return to the process anytime each day from 4 p.m. CST until 7:00 a.m the following day.  Room selection will not be available each day from 7:00 a.m. CST until 4 p.m.  Online room selection is scheduled to end July 2, 2010. You may view the freshman room selection schedule here.

How many times may I go online to pick or change my room?

You may change your room assignment as many times as you wish until the room selection process ends. Each time you change your assignment, or someone to whom you have given your proxy code moves you, you will receive an e-mail to your Bama e-mail address.

Can I pick anywhere on campus to live?

The residence halls for which you are eligible are determined by your status as an incoming freshman, any participation in a living-learning community, and available space. The residence halls from which you may choose will show up for you during the room selection process. Occupied spaces will not show up for you to select.

Please note that if you do not live as a freshman in a community for which you are eligible, e.g., the Engineering Living-Learning Community in Bryant or Honors Housing, you may not be able to move there as a sophomore.  At this time, space restrictions do not allow students who do not live in Ridgecrest, Riverside, Lakeside, or Bryant as freshmen to recontract there as sophomores.

How can I select a space within a living-learning community?

Students interested in a living-learning community, including Honors Housing, should apply for housing by March 1, 2010. Students in the College of Commerce and Business Administration (C&BA) are eligible to select space in the Business Living Option in Friedman Hall, if space is available. Male students in the College of Engineering are eligible to select space in the Engineering Living Option in Bryant Hall, as long as space is available. Female Engineering students are eligible to live in Engineering Community.  For assignment there, contact Tonya Nail at tnail@sa.ua.edu.
Students interested in the freshman living-learning communities in Parker-Adams Hall or Harris Hall may select space in those communities.  Selecting a space in either of those residence halls indicates that you understand and will abide by the requirements and opportunities as stipulated for those communities.
The Blount Undergraduate Initiative, the Honors College, the German House, the French House, the Arts on Campus Community, and the Mallet Assembly, require that you apply to, and be accepted by, these programs. If you are accepted into the Blount Initiative or the Honors College, you will be able to select your space online, as long as space is available. Assignments for students in the German House, the French House, and the Arts on Campus Community will be made by the HRC assignments staff. To learn more about our living-learning communities or to apply, please visit http://housing.ua.edu/living_learninghalls.htm.

How can I tell if a room, suite or apartment has enough space for my potential roommate(s) and me?

When you start the room selection process, you can search for the number of spaces that you need for you and any potential roommates. When you select a room to which you want to assign yourself, the number of spaces available to assign in that room will be visible to you.

How will I know what my assignment is?

After you have selected a space, or a roommate has assigned you by using your CWID and proxy code, your housing assignment will be displayed on your myHousing page. You will also receive an e-mail to your Bama e-mail address each time you select another space or a student to whom you have given your proxy code moves you to another space.

If I don’t pick a specific roommate, how will I know who my roommate is?

Once you have selected a space, the names of the roommate or roommates also assigned to that room will be visible, along with their contact information. We encourage you to contact your roommate(s) before you move in and begin to get to know them.

How do I select the roommate(s) I want to live with?

You may select the roommate(s) you want, or a roommate may select you, by using the assigned proxy code and last name of the potential roommate.  If you wish to pull another student into your room, you must have that person’s proxy code and the correct spelling of their last name.  When you find a room or suite on campus that has enough available space for you and your potential roommate(s), you may select it.  You will put your roommate into a space by submitting his/her proxy code and last name.  You must get the proxy code and last name from anybody you wish to pull in as a roommate.  In order for someone else to select you as a roommate, you must give that person your proxy code and the correct spelling of your last name.  Please exercise caution in giving your proxy code to a potential roommate.  Once you do, that person may change your housing assignment.

How do I find my proxy code?

Your proxy code is listed on your myHousing page.

What if I give my proxy code to another person and then no longer want to live with that person?

In order to prevent another person from using your proxy code to pull you in as a roommate, you may change your proxy code by clicking on the Change Proxy Code button on your myHousing page. If you already have a housing assignment that you like, and you do not want anybody to be able to move you to another room, click on the Lock My Assignment button on your myHousing page. Locking your assignment prevents a potential roommate from moving you to another space. You may later unlock your assignment, if you wish to change it. If another person moves you into an assignment that you do not want, you should select another space and then change your proxy code, to prevent your assignment being changed another time. If you both are assigned to the same room, one of you will need to choose another room.

Sometimes on my floor, the best moments are the most unexpected and random… whether it’s gathering in the halls to chit-chat about whatever comes up, watching movies, or just a genuine conversation between a couple of residents and myself.
